Leadership & Team Assessment and Development for Clean Technology Solutions – Venture Capitalist
Purpose: To provide support to a client in the assessment and development of a potential executive team. The client were venture capitalists who were intending to invest and thus to work with the team. They required help in understanding the preferences and personality traits of the team members and how they worked together. Since they intended the business to expand, the team would lead an extended company of employees. Therefore there was a need for discussions with the team about feedback on potential ‘blind spots’ in their preferred ways of working.
Taking action: The aim was to understand the individuals in the team and their needs, but also how the ‘team dynamics’ worked.
A workshop was run that explored:
• key concepts in the model
• co-coaching to receive and explore the feedback
• “what I learnt about myself, how does this fit with my understanding of me, my blind spots and experiences”; delegate self awareness and ability to work together were observed as part of the process
• understanding one-to-one relationships
• understanding teams
• “now that we understand the concepts, what does this mean for us?”; analysis of the team’s profiles: Inclusion, Control and Affection
• looking into the future as a team to identify potential blindspots. “What are our strengths, areas of potential conflict and difficulty in the way in which we might prefer to work? What is the potential impact on employees when the team expands? How we might be perceived if we just stayed in our preferences?”
Assessment tools and techniques used:
• FIRO-B (Fundamental Interpersonal Orientations-Behaviour) instrument in a combined feedback and workshop context
• co-coaching to receive and explore the feedback
• facilitated workshop
• continued one-to-one support
Results & outcomes: The purpose of this combined approach was both to help the client assess the suitability of the team and to develop team awareness. The organisation was successful in securing the investment.
